Get to know the team – Torben Fischer

IMG_4793

My Name is Torben and I am a team leader for the Recycle Up! Ghana Summer Camp 2015 on KNUST campus in Kumasi. Being one of the initiators of the project, I am very pleased and proud of our team to have organized two summer camps!

Besides Recycling Up! Ghana, I am currently working on my PhD in Economics in Germany. Broadly speaking, I am interested in how we can help people to improve their living conditions through providing them with essential services that help them to better themselves.

My interest in Ghana and Ghana’s (plastic) pollution problem derives from my time as a high school student when we organized events that helped to re-build schools and hospitals in Ghana. In 2013, I talked to Sr. Edgitha who was the main organizer of these events and spend more than fifteen years in Ghana working as doctor in a small hospital in Bato. During our discussion, we identified the plastic waste problem as a big problem that might threaten a peaceful co-existence of the Ghanaian society with Mother Nature.

In cooperation with the regional group of Technology without Borders e.V. we further developed the idea of educating future agents of change and make them aware about the challenges plastic waste pollution poses to their society. What I like about Recycle Up! Ghana is that we encourage young and bright minds to come together and develop their own ideas of how to best address this problem in their community.

I am looking forward to long discussions, interesting brain-storming sessions and fascinating ideas in this year’s episode!

Get to know the team – Sampson Oboh

Sam

My name is Sampson Oboh, a graduate of University of Cape Coast with Bsc Degree in Fisheries and Aquatic Science. I am a social entrepreneur and a community development stakeholder with a strong vision for mobilizing, educating, empowering and engaging young people in developing practical solutions to community challenges. I am the team leader for this year’s Recycle Up camp in Cape Coast.

Sampson is currently working as an assistant fisheries officer at the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development for his national service and a business development officer at somafo.com .

Indeed, the lack of sustainable plastic waste management in Ghana is a major problem affecting the living conditions of the people. This is why I am super motivated to contribute my quota to Recycle Up! Ghana which seeks to create local solutions to the problem. What really motivates me about recycle up is the approach “local problem….local solutions”. At Recycle Up, we believe in the creative and innovative minds of the young Ghanaian to solve our own problems and the soft skills acquired during the camp continually becomes integral part of the participant to excel in all their endeavors.

I see myself supervising a national scale of the Recycle Up Ghana initiative operating in all over Ghana and making Ghana, a plastic waste free country. Get on Board! And together, let’s make this a reality.

Get to know the team – Jude Agyei Asamoah

Jude

Jude Agyei Asamoah is 22 years old with a bachelor of Art degree in integrated Rural Art from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, KNUST – Kumasi.

I have been a member of Teog RG Kumasi since its inception over a year and a half ago. As a member, I had been involved in a few projects such as the KNUST Dustbin Project, Akrofrom Dry toilet Project amongst others. I was a team members in charge of Logistics for recycle up summer camp 2014 in Kumasi. Currently, I am the incoming President for Technology Without Borders, RG- Kumasi.

As the chaperone for Yaa Asantewaa Girls Senior High School, I guided the students to implement the Recycle Up Your School Project, where the students championed the education for segregation and collection of plastic waste generated in the schools which is then channeled to recycling firms for processing. During this process, we were able to form the first ever Recycle Up club in Ghana in the Senior High School. Currently we can boast of a working recycle up your school and recycle up clubs in about 7 schools in the Ashanti region.

This year, as a Team Leader for Recycle Up Ghana Summer camp in Kumasi,  I intend to utilize my strong passion for volunteering to help make the project a success. This year Recycle up will not only help participants develop their projects, but will also help equip them on how to make simple crafty works by hand with the plastics.

In the coming years I wish to see a better plastic- free Ghana, through the positive impact Recycle up Summer Camp is making on the youth of today.

Help lets recycle up Ghana to make positive impact.

Get to know the team – Ioana Jivet

Ioana

My name is Ioana, I am 26 years old and I am a Team Leader of Recycle Up! Ghana 2015 for the camp in Cape Coast.

When I am not Recycling Up! Ghana, I am finishing my Master studies in Computer Science at TUDelft, the Netherlands or travelling around Europe, delivering soft-skill training sessions to technology students, as member of a European student association.

This is how I also got to know about Recycle Up!, through one of TeoG’s members. Even though I don’t have a background in plastic waste management, what made me extremely interested and excited in this project is the social aspect: empowering the youth with skills and tools that will help them develop and realize their future ideas even after the summer camp is over.

What I like most about Recycle Up! Ghana is that the camp targets young students that have a lot of potential to shape their community. The program gives them not only technical knowledge, but also sparks their creative minds and proactivity into finding solutions. One you believe you can find a solution, it’s just a matter of time until you will!

Together, we can share our knowledge and experience, take advantage of the diversity in our backgrounds and cultures to find sustainable solutions for day-to-day problems.

Get to know the team – Kwesi Quagraine

kwesi

Kwesi is my name and am 27 years of age. I am a Team Leader for the Cape Coast version of  “Recycle Up! Ghana 2015”. I have lived and schooled in Cape Coast. I had my High School training at Mfantsipim and then proceeded to the University of Cape Coast for both my BSc and MPhil degrees in Physics and Meteorology, Atmospheric Physics and Climate Science. Currently work at the Department of Physics in the Uni.

I have been part of Technology Without Borders for the past year and a half. I first worked on the Teaching Computer Basics (TCB) Project as a team member and now I am leading the organization of this year’s Recycle Up! Ghana Summer Camp 2015!

There has been a challenge in Ghana concerning the recycling of plastics as well as waste disposal as a whole and I believe strongly that with a little education, Ghanaians will see the need to apply the 3Rs, that is, Reduce!, Reuse!! and Recycle!!! in our daily lives. Therefore, I think teaching the Youth about the need to recycle in the way to go in order to influence the old to buy into the vision. That’s my joy in helping organize the Summer Camp 2015!.
